Misty says, " In the beginning of the book I could infer that Serefina was catlike because the text said "she stalked slowly toward the rats. Inferring throughout this book propelled me forward needing to know the answers and then helped me understand the author’s implied messages." Her inner dialogue about wanting to find herself and having a place in the world, justifying disobeying her father for the greater good of others, and her strong desire to make real friends are struggles that tweens and teens have. Other underlining hints made me infer about Serafina going through her awkward tween years. I also made some connection with the book Jungle Book and how Mowgli was raised by wolves. The book describes her with cat-like reflexes and features, her father tells of her birth in the woods, and her mom is a catamount.

Michelle says, " The clues that trickled throughout the book about Serafina made me infer that she was human with undertones of big cat features. If she was so different, why wasn't Braeden startled by her appearance? Could she be part animal?" I questioned why Serafina was so different, why she only had 4 toes, why her eyes were yellow, why was her hearing so keen and why her collarbone was different and allowed her to squeeze into tight spaces. I questioned why Serafina's Pa kept her hidden and why they lived in the basement of the Biltmore Estate. In chapter 2, I was questioning who the man in the black cloak is and what had he done with the little girl (Clara). Specifically, who is Serafina and what happened to her mom. Shannon says, " The suspense of the text left me questioning the entire plot of the story. Why does he encourage her to chase rats? Why are her eyes yellow? Who are her parents? Who is the man with the black cloak? Are the children he attacks dead or hidden? This book is a mystery/fantasy book so there were plenty of questions to ask." Who is this girl Serafina and why in the world is she chasing rats? Why does her dad keep Serafina in hiding? As the book goes on more questions pop up that has the reader confused. Jennifer says, " Immediately this book has me asking questions. When I made a connection to a question I had, I understood a little bit more about what was going on." All these questions compelled me to read further to find the answers. I wondered why was Serefina found in the woods. I questioned everything to analyze and figure out what was going on.I wondered why the Man in the Black Cloak took children. Misty says, " I used Questioning throughout the book.
